Mawlamyine is the fourth largest city in Myanmar. It usually lasts 6-9 hours from Yangon to Mawlamyaine, via VIP bus and costs 10,000 KS per head.
Since we were too busy with work — it took us atleast 2 years to finally accept our friend’s invitation to see Mawlamyaine. TBH, it wasn’t a waste!
So, want to enjoy Mawlamyaine like we did? Well, here is a list of what you shouldn’t miss out when you visit Mawlamyaine!
1. Explore the biggest reclining Buddha in the world — Win Sein Taw Ya Giant Buddha.
The breath-taking 180-metre Buddha statue is not just beautiful outside. From the inside the detailed shrines, statues and stupas would make your jaw drop.
2. Wear a traditional Mon and Karen outfit.
Mon outfits are usually red and Karen outfits are with fringes. Don’t miss this out! Especially if you’re a fashion savy — like me!
3. Swim at Swese Beach and Hpa-An waterfalls.
Setse is Mawlamyine’s prime beach destination.
While Hpa-an waterfalls is a 3-4 hour drive from Mawlamyaine. The road going there is crazy but it’s worth it!
PS Hpa-an waterfalls has a cleaner water! And I enjoyed it more! Mind you, muslims, alcohol and meat isn’t allowed in this area. =(
4. Attend a traditional wedding.
If you will be given the chance to attend a Traditional wedding, don’t hesitate! It’s not that luxurious but you would enjoy the colorful experience, their hospitality and tons of food.
The family who took care of us. We love them so much.
5. Check out some Pagodas.
The best hilltop pagodas in Mawlamyine are: Uzina, Kayaikthalan and Mahamyatmuni.
P.S. I’m not so sure about the names of the Pagodas so I just collated the scenic photos we took randomly.
6. Visit the Death Railway Museum
Thanbyuzayat was the terminus of the infamous Death Railway built using forced labour by the Japanese army during World War II. This is a modest museum, that commemorates the individuals who built, died and sacrificed their lives. This is a new museum which opened this year.
During our 3 days of traveling in Mawlamyaine we had a lot of great experience from food, having our car broken, me finishing a book and a whole lot more!
We would definitely go back to Mawlamyaine.
